How to Break into Investment Banking

Investment banking (IB) is the new cool in the modern era. Many of today's youth want to become investment bankers, mainly because IB is one of the best-paying domains in today's world. But with so much competition and a limited number of jobs, recruiters must be picky to choose the best talent possible.

But do not worry; with the right set of skills and passion, you can get into IB as well. Here's how to build a fitting profile for IB:

1. Get the Basics Right

Before we jump into any depth, it is essential to make sure that you have a robust foundation set. Some basic skills that play an integral role in the IB are Analytical Skills, Mathematical Skills, Basic Finance, and probably the most famous one... Excel. It would be a plus if you could also dabble in financial modelling, accounting and other related financial topics.

2. Get a Relevant Certification

Some of the most valued certificates in the industry are:

  • CFA - Chartered Financial Analyst

  • CA - Chartered Accountant

  • FRM - Financial Risk Management

  • MBA (finance)

3. Do an Internship

If you have completed an Investment Banking Internship, it will be easier for you to find a job within the same industry. Obtaining an Internship position is more effective than obtaining an Analyst position directly. This will also help you connect with relevant personnel from the industry who can further help you land a permanent full-time role in IB.

Now that you know how to start, what are you waiting for?
